Yksi WAS 2025 -kongressin vaikuttavimmista hetkistä oli emeritusprofessori Eli Colemanin keynote-luento “Seksologia uhattuna: historiallisia opetuksia”. Luennollaan hän muistutti osuvasti, että seksologian juuret ovat vahvasti sidoksissa oikeudenmukaisuuden, tasa-arvon ja yhteiskunnallisen muutoksen historiaan. Tämä oli paitsi virkistävä myös tarpeellinen puheenvuoro, sillä tasa-arvotyö ja yhdenvertaisuus ovat tällä hetkellä monella saralla uhattuna.
Coleman käsitteli luennossaan muun muassa Ivan Blotchin ja Magnus Hirschfeldin työtä. Hirschfeldin perustama seksologinen instituutti tuhottiin Berliinissä natsien toimesta vuonna 1933. Seksologista tiedettä on kohdannut vastustus ja vaino ennenkin – eikä tuo vastustus ole kadonnut. Vastustus on vain saanut uusia muotoja ja perusteluita.
Vaikka Hirschfieldin seksologinen instituutti tuhottiin, seksologian historia ei ole menneisyyttä. Seksuaalitutkimuksen historia opettaa meille, että seksologian puolustaminen ei ole vain tieteen puolustamista, vaan samalla taistelua ihmisoikeuksien puolesta.

“Sexology has always been more than science – it’s also a fight for human rights.”
One of the most striking moments of the congress was Professor Emeritus Eli Coleman’s keynote lecture, “Sexology Under Threat: Lessons from History.” He powerfully reminded us that the roots of sexology are deeply tied to the history of justice, equality, and social change. His message felt both refreshing and urgently necessary, especially now as equality and human rights face increasing threats in many parts of the world.
Coleman spoke, for instance, about Ivan Blotch and Magnus Hirschfeld, who’s pioneering sexological institute in Berlin was destroyed by the Nazis in 1933. Sexological science has faced persecution and resistance before, and that resistance has not disappeared. It has only changed form and language.
Even though Hirschfeld’s institute was destroyed, the history of sexology is not just the past. It is a mirror for today. It teaches us that defending sex research is, in essence, defending human rights.
